Why Does My Computer Play Back Mp3 Files At Different Speeds Every Day?

My iPod and Mac like to take it upon themselves to change the playback speeds of my mp3 files. Some days you can really notice that the tracks are going very fast, other days they sound fine!
Why does this happen? Its not particularly annoying - just wondering!
