When Do You Start Decorating For Christmas?

December 14th, 2009 by admin | Filed under holidays.

I don’t decorate until after Thanksgiving…
The shopping centers here had their Christmas decorations up on HALLOWEEN!
Is it just me, or does that seem extremely early?
When do you and/or your town decorate for Christmas?

Did you know…one of the hottest Christmas presents for kids is Zhu Zhu Pets for Christmas?

I heard a Christmas song on the radio on October 17th! Commercialism is ruining Christmas. I start celebrating Christmas season on Thanksgiving. The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day always ushers in Christmas.

<---- guilty of decorating as soon as the pumpkins are trashed
The Mr. and I have been playing Christmas music since the day after Halloween. I already have all of my decorations (boxed and labeled) out of the attic and my husband has actually been coming home on his lunch break to start putting the lights on the trees outside. We won't turn the lights on until after Thanksgiving, but he wants to have everything ready to go just case we get a snow storm between now and then.

I love that all the stores started so early. My dad said Lowes set up their christmas stuff up the beginning of october. I’ve already bought a wreath for my front door, but dont plan on hanging it up yet. I also looked to see if the music channels on my tv started the christmas music yet, but no luck. I cant wait for christmas! I absolutely love the spirit of it all, and decorating is so much fun. You can officially start the day after thanksgiving, but i am waiting until dec 1st (which isnt much later lol)

I always decorate for Christmas the weekend after Thanksgiving and leave them up until New Year’s.
There’s a house nearby where I live. I saw them putting up Christmas lights outside the day after Halloween. I figured okay, maybe because it’s so nice out, they want to get it out of the way before it gets too cold and they won’t actually turn them on. Well, they had them turned on the next night! That’s just crazy… give Thanksgiving a chance to get here!

i start putting up christmas decor the day after thanksgiving. it ussually takes me till the middle of december to get everything up and ready. My grandmother puts her tree up Nov 1 and the the outdoor lights the next weekend! i think you should atleast get through thanksgiving before putting up decorations.

  6. hello says:

There is currently a crane installing a 150 foot christmas tree in my neighborhood shopping center…it’s madness.
I start on the friday after thanksgiving.
But the retail industry does it to get a head start on the christmas shopping season…the longer it’s “the holidays” the longer we’ll shop.
That’s just my opinion…lol and I’m a commercial real estate broker specializing in retail shopping centers… :)

Excuse my ignorance, but I don’t know when Thanksgiving is.
We have started decorating, BUT it’s only putting the outdoor lights up. They aren’t going, but they take a long time to get up. We moved last November here, and never put them up (I was pregnant) so this year, we have them all to do.
Christmas decorations, and all the cr@p to buy have been up in the stores since September 15th (3yo’s Birthday).
What a joke. I will be honest, I am limiting my kids time out, because they will lose interest in Christmas
We put all the other decorations up on December 1st, then take them down 12 days after Christmas.

I decorate most of the house the second weekend in December as we put our tree then too. After that its just tiny touches here or there outside to accent everything. One of our sister stores set up their christmas stuff the first of August along side the Halloween now thats early
Thanksgiving is always and has been always that 4th thrusday of November and this yr its Nov 27

UGH!! I HATE when stores have decorations up so early. I was at Kohl’s in mid-October and they were decorating already. I complained to the manager and then left without making a purchase.
I don’t decorate until after Thanksgiving either. Some malls are already decorated, but a few more *upscale* malls wait a few more weeks.
I love Nordstrom’s…they don’t decorate until after Thanksgiving. They even have signs at the entrance of their stores saying they take one holiday at a time!!

  10. Hannah's mommy says:

After Thanksgiving. I refuse to be rushed. I think it makes the holidays less special if you stretch them out over 2 months.
I know what you mean–Wal-Mart’s Christmas decorations went up the day after Halloween. I live in the country, but decorations in the town nearest us usually goes up the week of Thanksgiving. Still too early for me.

I am a procrastinator from way back, so it wasn’t uncommon for us not to get going decorating until mid-December. Last year was our first time joining the masses decorating Thanksgiving weekend.
We do enjoy listening to Christmas music weeks and weeks before Christmas. We listened to our Charlie Brown CD in July!
I love Christmas, family, the traditions, even the weather(okay I grew up in Hawaii so I pined for snow as a child), so I hate the fact that Christmas season starts earlier and earlier. I feel that to keep something special, you also must keep it short and sweet.
ETA: I have to admit, I have most of my shopping done already! I have to ship things out and was tired of paying $30 to gets some gifts sent out.

  12. Aaron & Jesse's Mommy says:

We decorate at the first of December, we get our tree on Dec 6th (our oldest daughters birthday). I do think its nuts to see Christmas items at Halloween. But people really do want it, apparently alot more than those of us who appear a tad more sane LOL. Our town is already decorating, they kinda have to. Our Christmas Parade will be on Nov 22, a week before Thanksgiving. It saddens me really, the whole purpose of Thanksgiving gets lost in the commercialism of Christmas (which many don’t see as anything more than a day to get gifts.

  13. Nekhtet says:

    in august… if i don’t i’ll never make it.
i’m barely into my design… i have to get someone do bend wire structures and i still have to get an inflatable center piece and more lights.
along with two spotlight’s with arm adjusters… with green incad or spotlamp with halogens…. bulbs.
i’m so far behind.. i’m suppose to get everything set up and turn on at 5pm thankgiving.
the tradition.. so folk from afar, while going back home can drive by, walk by and enjoy my display… along with many others who are set up by this time for the out of town thanksgiving crowd.
oh the expense.. but it’s worth it… i hope.
    :D

  14. like my "cow lick"? says:

My town after Thanksgiving, me? The week before Christmas and I take every thing down the 2nd day of January. I never leave Christmas lights hanging from my roof either. Our stores too had Christmas and Halloween mixed together. When I was growing up Christmas displays and toys showed up in stores after Thanksgiving. Now it seems the magic of Christmas has been lost, my grandchildren are no longer wide-eyed about it because it now starts so early. Sad. Poppy

  15. Poppy says:

I don’t do much decorating, but we usually get our tree and put it up maybe a week or two before Christmas. The people downstairs from us put up their (fake) tree on Thanksgiving, when everyone is over for dinner.
You are definitely right, it gets earlier and earlier every year! I was just remembering, last year I was birthday shopping for someone mid-Oct. at Walmart. When we got there, I didn’t know it beforehand but they had trick-or-treating for the kids, AND SANTA AND MRS. CLAUS WERE THERE! Seriously - no joke. My daughter got her pic with Santa on Oct.12 last year - obviously before Halloween had even come and gone! Now that’s ridiculous!

  16. angelbab says:

I just started today. 11.5.08. I dont decorate the outside untill Dec. 1st but my inside is always done by November 15. I love Christmas, and the earlier the better. Plus seeing all those decorations makes me feel better. It means that a new year is just around the corner…a time to start fresh! LOL

  17. truebrun says:

The Friday after Thanksgiving is when we get everything down from the attic.
The stores have Christmas stuff out way to early! It’s still fall and we didn’t even get to Thanksgiving yet.
My town does there holiday decorating the 1st weekend in December (I believe). It makes the village look so pretty!

  18. Kristy Lynn says:

I noticed the same thing at my wal-mart. They had halloween right next to christmas decorations. How odd! Anyways, I decorate the day after Thanksgiving. I only do the tree because I am not that creative. lol.

  19. Kayla429 says:

Usually when I take my fall decorations down which is directly after Thanksgiving. But this year we are moving just as soon as our house is ready….which is supposed to be a month or so, so I’ll probably hold off until we are in the new house.

  20. Emma&Lau says:

Hehehe i know im sad but i actually wrapped 3 presents last night and we are buying our tree this weekend so it will go up 1st of december like always

  21. *Jordan's mummy* says:

  22. C's Mom says:

Day after Thanksgiving….although I am going to wait to put up my tree, because between a 1-year old, my dog, and my cat, I’m not sure it wil stay up!!!

  23. Eli's mommy ~~~ Rosie says:
