Sociology- is a branch of the social sciences that uses systematic methods of empirical investigation[1][2] and critical analysis[3] to develop and refine a body of knowledge about human social structure and activity, sometimes with the goal of applying such knowledge to the pursuit of social welfare
Social Work-is both a profession and social science. It involves the application of social theory and research methods to study and improve the lives of people, groups, and societies. It incorporates and uses other social sciences as a means to improve the human condition and positively change society’s response to chronic problems.
Sociology is a theoretical, research based course of study that utilizes statistics, social theory and philosophy, and a variety of qualitative and quantitative methods to study social interaction.
Social Work is a vocational course of study the prepares an individual to work in community settings with people in need - everything from criminals, the homeless, racial and ethnic minorities, the impoverished, LGBT, and others. It generally requires practicums and/or clinical classes and is substantially less theoretical.
An undergraduate major in sociology with a graduate degree in social work would be quite good as a graduate degree in social work is becoming more and more necessary.
The two subjects are similar, but a sociology major will study a lot of things that will have little to do with the job of social work - such as the study of social movements, formal organizations, bureaucracy, etc.
Sociology is the study of cultures, people, groups and interactions.
Social work is the study of human interaction, family dynamics and counselling. If you want to be a Social Worker, you’ll need to take social work and psychology classes. Sociology classes are great as a supplement to the core counselling and social work classes.
Hope that helps.
sociology and social work are different. sociology is theoretical and contributes to the further growth of the science and study of sociology. social workers most often work in community settings with the population and have a separate graduate program, an MSW as opposed to a Ph.D. in sociology.
