What is the best anti-virus for a netbook?
Hey guys,
I’ve recently bought a netbook and I am trying to look for the most lightweight things to put on my netbook so that I can get the most out of my battery. Can you recommend some anti-virus programs that are lightweight as well as some other programs?
Thanks!

AVG works just fine. There is also a Netbook version, but the free one doesn’t bog down my HP Mini.

I have a netbook and have tried using a few different security software programs at various times. Nothing has proved 100% effective at blocking all threats and there is no fully guaranteed solution anyway so it’s always best to have a back up and recovery option available. I can’t recommend AVG as I’ve used it and had too many false positive detections and it even removed essential system files!
My preferred choice of software which won’t slow a netbook down too much is:
Avast anti virus (free) and sometimes I uninstall Avast and switch to Avira (free). They are both light on resources. I switch products just because I don’t like to rely on any single product. They all miss things because virus scanners are reactionary. There’s always a lead time between when a threat is identified and virus scanner vendors have had time to analyze it and come up with a method of removing it.
I use Spybot for real time protection against malware and Malwarebytes as an on demand scanner. The basic rule is to only have one real time anti spyware program running.
As for anti virus and only having one program installed and running - it’s nearly always not a good idea to install more than one. However there is a program which is specifically designed to work alongside other security software called Threatfire (free) and it can provide a significant boost to detection rates. It uses behavioral analysis to prevent threats - even unknown (zero day) ones and it also has a rootkit scanner. I have used it with Avast or Avira and have had absolutely no compatibility problems at all. I’m sure that nearly everyone will say that you should never have more than one anti virus program but in this case it’s the exception to the rule. http://www.threatfire.com - It will slow down your netbook though!
Another way of keeping malware at bay is to make sure that your software is kept up to date but more importantly to remove any old insecure files which automatic updates often do not remove. I use Secunia PSI (free) and it’s pretty good although it doesn’t cover every piece of software ever released. If you decide to use it keep an eye on the list of programs that is has detected as patched and update or remove then install only the latest versions of anything that it has missed.
An example of how it works:http://billmullins.wordpress.com/2009/07…
Secunia will automatically warn you if a program needs updating.
    secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning
The personal desktop version is best. Scan in advanced mode then click on the + sign next to any issues found for the fix. If no fix is available the file path is shown for manual removal. It runs in the background all the time but if you like you can just make use of the free online scan from time to time instead of installing it.
Choose what’s best for you. I suggest some kind of link scanner http://www.mywot.com or http://linkscanner.avg.com (I use AVG Linkscanner) to prevent connection to known malicious sites and maybe use Thunderbird as your email client instead of Outlook Express if that’s what you’re using as it’s far more secure.
To detect any digitally unsigned running processes there is Prio (free): http://www.prnwatch.com/prio
It will only run when you start Task Manager so doesn’t hog resources. It highlights unsigned processes in red and if you know what they are you can add them to the “treat as valid” list. It then becomes very easy to spot any new suspicious process.
I also use MZ Tweaker to get the best performance from my netbook. http://www.mztweak.com/programs.html - It’s fairly advanced so it’s a good idea to create a system restore point before applying any of the tweaks or changing any of the settings but it does speed things up a lot!
It’s a good idea to create system restore points every few days anyway and remove old ones as they take up lots of hard drive space. All you need to know about System Restore: http://bertk.mvps.org/index.html
There are reputable free online virus/ malware scanners that you can use to check if anything has been missed by your installed software and you can scan with them if you think that some threat has gone undetected:http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/http://www.superantispyware.com/onlinesc…http://www.bitdefender.com/scanner/onlin…
I’d also recommend DAP to speed up and manage downloads. It can be integrated into Internet Explorer, Firefox or Opera browsers.http://www.speedbit.com/dap/
Some other programs which work better on netbooks are:
Foxit Reader instead of Adobe Reader
VLC Media Player along with MediaMonkey (can burn cd’s) instead of Windows Media Player.
Cleaner & Defraggler to keep things tidy - http://www.piriform.com
Irfanview for image editing - http://www.irfanview.com
