What Duties Can A Social Worker Perform In A Work Setting That A Clinical Psychologist Cannot Perform?
October 5th, 2009 by admin | Filed under social.Long story short, I want to be a social worker and my father thinks I should be a clinical psychologist (no doubt due to the waived tuition and stipend provided by most doctoral programs). He thinks a clinical psychologist would be able to do anything a social worker does in a work setting. So, I am trying to find out the difference in duties and responsibilities. More specifically, what can a social worker do that a clinical psychologist can’t…

Clinical Psychologist
A clinical psychologist generally has six or more years of advanced schooling in addition to a bachelor’s degree, holds either a Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy) or Psy.D. (Doctor of Psychology) degree. The advanced education focuses on the psychological causes of human thoughts, feelings, and behavior, how to conduct psychotherapy, and how to help people who are dealing with psychological problems. They receive classroom training as well as practical experience. At the end of their doctoral program, they spend a full year providing therapy under the supervision of experienced clinicians.
Psychologists are licensed by the state, and they do not prescribe medications. Only people with the requisite training and licensure have the legal right to call themselves psychologists.
Social Worker
A social worker is someone who has a Master’s Degree in Social Work (MDSW), which typically takes three years of training beyond a bachelor’s degree. It includes both academic coursework and supervised clinical training. In addition, social workers who specialize in clinical work have six years of supervised post-master’s experience in a clinical setting, such as a psychiatric facility, a community mental health agency, or a family counseling agency, and receive the CSW-R designation (Registered Clinical Social Worker). Social workers often, but always, look at the patient’s problems in the greater context of the social entities around him or her.
