I Want To Start A Social-work Business. Can I Be Ethical And Profitable At The Same Time?

January 11th, 2010 by admin | 2 Comments | Filed in social

I have a real passion for helping people change their lives, and offering suggestions & resources to them. I want to establish a social services firm to serve people who are in need of these services (such as counseling, job training, and resource connections), and then expand. Many corporations seem to be more concerned about the bottom line than the people they serve. I don’t want to be like that. I want to offer affordable, accesible social services for people, but I am concerned about profit. How does one balance the needs of their clients with the desire for good profit?

Early Child Development: Family Play Time

December 24th, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in sports

Did you know that you are your child’s first playmate? Emotional self-regulation skills, social skills, and relationship skills come from that early bond you form with your child. One of the challenges for so many parents is that they are now adults and have forgotten how to play. They are caught up with serious things like paying bills, working, managing the house, and raising children. However, playing with your child is “seriously” necessary.

Play allows a parent and child to bond and form a secure attachment. This attachment provides the child with a basis for a happy, healthy life. The trick to playing with your child, however, is two-fold. Firstly, you have to be able to let your “adult” responsibilities go for 30-minutes so that you can play and be present. Secondly, you have to enter the child’s world, literally and figuratively, and discover your “inner” child.

Here are five simple steps to help you let go of the heavy world of responsibilities and play with your child:

  1. Acknowledge that play is as important as the bills, the dishes, dinnertime, and work.
  2. Use your own emotional self-regulation skills to allow your adult stresses to fade away when you are playing with your child. Tell yourself, “This is important. I’m going to be in the here and now. Worrying about anything else during playtime doesn’t help me get those things done nor does it help my relationship with my child.”
  3. Take deep breaths anytime you feel physical stress. The breathing will allow you to relax.
  4. Smile and laugh even if you don’t feel like it at first because we know that pretending that you’re having fun actually produces real fun!
  5. Play! For some of you, it has been a long time since you picked up a block, a doll or a racecar. Don’t fret, you can awake the child within. In order to play with your child, however, it’s best to understand the developmental stages of your child so that your expectation matches your experience.
  • A baby plays through close interaction. All the goo-goo and ga-ga baby talk and physical connection helps your baby bond to you.
  • A toddler begins with “parallel play”. That means you basically play side by side with your child. Your presence is still necessary but don’t expect much interaction.
  • Preschoolers will interactively play. You could have a doll and your child could have a doll and those dolls might talk to one another! You must remember, though, that your child will still direct your play. You are but a puppet allowing them to play out their imagination and they will love you forever for the time and effort you give.
  • Elementary age children might let you be a creative member in playtime. As your child shows increasing independence in play, you may feel inclined to stop playing. It’s important to understand that playing is still essential to your child and to your relationship.
  • By the time your child is a teenager, all those wonderful years playing with your child will really pay off. I find my “playtime” with my teenager is still incredibly fun.

It is difficult to take time every day to play with your child. Although it is ideal to have daily playtime, weekly “playdates” are good too. Teaching a child that life is fun and playful rather than rushed and tense is so much better, wouldn’t you agree? The time and effort you put into playing with your child now will make a world of difference in your relationship later.

Have Wooden Toys Had Its Time?

December 6th, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in toys

Nowadays, parents tend to buy toys made of plastic or other materials to their children because most of the time, these toys are more interesting compared to the much simpler wooden toys. Modern toys can do so many things because most often than not, they are battery-operated. However, there are still some specialty toy shops that still sell wooden toys because of their unique characteristics and features.

There are many advantages in using wooden toys. Wooden toys are generally simpler and quieter than modern toys. Modern toys usually produce noise and usually do some acrobatics that some kids might find chaotic and might make them confused. Wooden toys on the other hand, give them a chance to be creative and to do things on their own using their free hands and their imagination because of its generally simple design.

Wooden toys are also safer than other toys made with other materials. Wood is non-toxic and they usually are not very complicated toys which make it easier for children to manipulate or play with, without fear of your children getting hurt. Also, most toys made from wood are not operated with battery.

These toys are also considered to be more educational than plastic toys. Toys made from wood are very simple which children can touch and explore with their bare hands. This helps a lot in their development.

These old-fashioned toys can also stand the test of time. You will still probably see your Dad?s wooden rocking horse in your attic or your Mom?s wooden toy dishes. This can make you save more money than buying plastic toys. Moreover, when a plastic toy breaks, it could even be dangerous to your child. Plastic toys also have negative effects on the environment. And we don?t need that especially now.

Because wooden toys are simple, they are also easier to clean and maintain. They do not have so many nooks and crannies that you might overlook when cleaning. These are also great gifts since most wooden toys are considered rare finds. Plastic toys will lose their value after being used for many times, but not toys made from wood. You can keep your wooden toys for now and after so many years, they can be considered as collectibles.

So you might ask yourself again, have wooden toys had its time even if they have so many benefits?

Probably yes. Because of the increasing popularity of plastic and electronic toys, toys made from wood are now being left behind, despite the aforementioned advantages. Children now prefer toys that can do many things. They do not want very simple toys anymore. And some wooden toys are more expensive than their plastic counterparts probably because they are considered to be collectibles and very unique and hard to find. Moreover, you can almost hardly see wooden toys in the leading toy shops these days.

To sum things up, the answer to your question ?have wooden toys had its time? is almost. There are only a few of them now. Before these toys went out of the market completely, buy some for your children for them to experience the advantages of playing with wooden toys.

How Can You Play A Musical Wind Instrument And Hum At The Same Time?

October 29th, 2009 by admin | 8 Comments | Filed in sports

My band teacher said that if you play the first note of a major scale and hum the thirteenth while you are playing, you can hear a major chord.
How do you do this though? I tried it on my flute and on my recorder, but I can’t do both at once (play AND hum).
