How Are Social Security Benefits Calculated?

January 8th, 2010 by admin | 6 Comments | Filed in social

On my annual social security report, my income for 6 of the past 19 years were incorrect, significantly lower than they should have been. Are benefits upon retiring based on your average income over your working life, or only based on the last year’s income that you worked? Is it worth the hassle to correct what was on the report? Will those errors impact the monthly benefit I receive upon retiring? I think my former employer cooked the books and didn’t pay SS taxes - is that why the statement is in error? Can I use my old tax returns to prove that I actually made more money than the statement shows? I have a lot of questions but any answers I receive will be greatly appreciated.

I am ignorant regarding social security benefits since I am still pretty young.
So I am asking a basic question, what are they and how important are they to have later in life?
Additionally, if I was to work abroad with a foreign employer can I still qualify for it later or would I have to work for a US employer?

Are There Tax Benefits If I Get A Business Lisense For Selling Things On Online Auctions?

November 19th, 2009 by admin | 2 Comments | Filed in life logistics

I’m thinking about turning my online selling into a business, and I’m trying to get a feel for the tax-related pros and cons of making it official.
Here are 2 questions:
(1) I understand that I can write off business expenses on my tax returns. That includes computer equipment, trips overseas to purchase merchandise, etc. But I’ve never itemized my tax return before. Would I get more money back if I start a business, and then itemize my deductions rather than just taking the default deduction like I always do?
(2) If I make my online selling into an official business, will I have to pay extra business-related taxes?

How Can I Compare My Current Tax Exempt Salary And Benefits To Job Offers Back In The States?

September 11th, 2009 by admin | 2 Comments | Filed in life logistics

I am trying to find out a way to compare my current NET income to what I could potentially NET back home. All of the salary comparison websites do not accurately calculate my tax exemption status and cost of living (lower) here in Germany.
My guess is that I’ll need to almost double my salary as I’m not paying most taxes here in Germany. Here’s some more info about my situation.
1. Income tax exemption - I don’t pay US or German income taxes. I’m exempt from both. I’m not paying US state income taxes either. This probably saves me at least 30% every year.
2. Sales taxes - I only pay sales taxes when I eat at a restaurant or shop for groceries on the economy (a german grocery store). I mostly shop at the commissary on base…and they sell everything at cost…you can’t get groceries cheaper anywhere else. All other goods (utilities, clothing, cars, electronics, etc) are tax exempt. I prepay for gasoline (current US national average price without sales tax).
Any suggestions?
