Four Common Myths About Social Skills

November 29th, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in social

Many people misunderstand what social skills are - and what they’re not. Here’s a quick look at a few common myths and some information on what social skills really are.

Myth #1:

People who like talking are interesting and have good social skills.

False.

Verbosity isn’t a social skill. In fact, it can damage one’s social popularity and result in avoidance by others. Such over-talkative individuals may be seen as:

- self-centered: most of their monologue is about themselves, their opinions, their activities, etc.

- rude: they monopolize the conversation without letting others contribute or participate

- selfish: their incessant talk shows little respect for the listener’s time and interests

- boring: loquacious individuals tend to include too much trivial information that is irrelevant and uninteresting to the listener.

The number of words spoken does not necessarily reflect good-quality conversation nor an ability to effectively interact with others. People are interesting when they have something worthwhile to say and are able to engage in a discussion. Good social skills include the ability to carry on a conversation without dominating it and to encourage others to participate.

Myth #2:

Introverts are socially unskilled individuals.

False.

The elements of good social skills are the same for everyone. Both introverts and extroverts alike can have superb social skills or, alternatively, very poor social skills. Skills such as listening, conversing, remembering names, showing common courtesies, and giving good feedback require attentiveness from anyone who displays good social skills, regardless of whether they’re an introvert or an extrovert. A lack of such attentiveness shows a general lack of social skills.

Introverts who have refined their interpersonal skills have techniques to follow when in social situations, and those who continue to improve their professional and personal relationships are highly socially skilled.

Myth #3:

A good education and hard work are all anyone needs to succeed in a career and in life. Good social skills aren’t important.

False.

A solid education and work or personal experience are undoubtedly key factors that contribute to success. Knowing how to perform a job function, managing the tactics of a plan or having technical knowledge of machinery or equipment qualifies the individual for the position.

However, as the individual progresses in her career and life, the manner in which she interacts with others - and the quality of that interaction - plays an important role in determining the degree of success she attains. There are always others who have input and an impact on the ease or difficulty she will face when seeking career advancement and development.

Those with highly developed social skills understand the importance and value of their relationships. They realize that while having the appropriate education or experience is essential, social skills are paramount when seeking ongoing career opportunities.

Myth #4:

People with poor social skills are aloof, uncaring and indifferent.

False.

Individuals who have poor social skills may, in fact, caring and interested. It’s unfortunate that their lack of social skills results in them being misunderstood and negatively labelled. The misrepresentation that these individuals incur is caused by their inability to know what to say and how to act or behave in social situations. Often, they lack the necessary skills to effectively express themselves and communicate in ways that show support, encouragement and friendliness.

To be understood as the person they truly are, and to avoid being mistaken for someone they’re not, they need to acquire good social skills that allow others to recognize their positive attributes. These individuals simply need assistance and guidance to know what to do and how to interact effectively in social situations. There are many methods and techniques that can help individuals learn these simple skills and easily implement them in everyday life.

What are Social Skills?

Social skills are a collection of verbal communication techniques and non-verbal actions that we use to interact and connect with others.

Strong social skills include (among others):

- active listening

- knowing how to greet others

- conversing and making small talk

- building a friendly rapport

- complimenting others

- offering praise and encouragement

- showing support and understanding

- acknowledging others

- saying ‘thank you’

Social skills can be learned by anyone and most skills are easy to integrate into daily life. Sometimes all it takes is to be aware of an action, such as saying ‘thank you’ or remembering someone’s name. Other times it’s breaking a poor habit, like interrupting someone when they’re speaking. Then there are some social skills that involve learning new techniques, such as giving constructive feedback and making small talk.

Good social skills are key to establishing, maintaining and growing all relationships - at work, at home and in the community.

The Truth About Children and Divorce: Dealing with the Emotions So You and Your Children Can Thrive

From Publishers Weekly

Psychology professor Emery knows firsthand how difficult divorce can be for children. He has an adult daughter from his first marriage, and while he regrets some of his behavior with regard to his ex-wife, he also recognizes that he and his former spouse were effective parents. When there are children, a divorce doesn’t end a husband-wife relationship. Emery believes too many couples say they don’t want their children hurt by their divorce, but the children still end up stuck in the middle, almost always facing discomfort. So, Emery writes, “The first order of business is negotiating a working relationship with your ex.” Emery explains how to establish and develop the foundation of a co-parenting partn [Read More...]

What Do the Bible and Quran Say About the Life and Play?

November 19th, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in sports

Before dealing with the topic of the PLAY in Quran versus Bible versus sciences, it is mandatory to remember that the total words in the Bible are 788,280 while the total words in the Quran are 77,473. It follows that, the Bible is more than 10 times the Quran word-wise. The PLAY is mentioned 45 times in the Bible (KJV) and 19 times in the Quran, i.e. the Bible mentions the PLAY more than two times as does the Quran. In other words, the Bible has the potential of more than 10 times (word-wise) and more than twice (subject-wise) than the Quran to talk about the PLAY.

In this series, the topic of the Play is classified into six parts, herein is the fourth part, which is the Play in this Life and Afterlife.

The Life and Play in the Bible

And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp.

Isaiah 11:8

And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice’ den.

The people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play.

Exodus 32:6

And they rose up early on the morrow, and offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play.

Provide me now a man that can play well

1 Samuel 16:17

And Saul said unto his servants, provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me.

Brought this fellow to play

1 Samuel 21:15

Have I need of mad men, that ye have brought this fellow to play the mad man in my presence? shall this fellow come into my house?

Let the young men now arise, and play before us

2 Samuel 2:14

And Abner said to Joab, Let the young men now arise, and play before us. And Joab said, Let them arise.

All the beasts of the field play.

Job 40:20

Surely the mountains bring him forth food, where all the beasts of the field play.

Wilt thou play with him as with a bird?

Job 41:5

Wilt thou play with him as with a bird? or wilt thou bind him for thy maidens?

Play skillfully with a loud noise.

Psalm 33:3

Sing unto him a new song; play skillfully with a loud noise.

The damsels were playing with timbrels.

Psalm 68:25

The singers went before, the players on instruments followed after; among them were the damsels playing with timbrels.

As well the singers as the players on instruments shall be there

Psalm 87:7

As well the singers as the players on instruments shall be there: all my springs are in thee.

Thou hast made to play therein.

Psalm 104:26

There go the ships: there is that leviathan, whom thou hast made to play therein.

Can play well on an instrument

Ezekiel 33:32

And, lo, thou art unto them as a very lovely song of one that hath a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument: for they hear thy words, but they do them not.

The streets of the city shall be full of boys and girls playing in the streets thereof

Zechariah 8:5

And the streets of the city shall be full of boys and girls playing in the streets thereof.

As it is written: “The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.”

1 Corinthians 10:7

Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.”

Life and Play in the Quran:

Allah does not create the heavens and the earth in Play!

Surah: 21, Verse: 16

It was not in play that We created the heavens and the earth and all that lies between them.

Surah: 44, Verse: 38

It was not in play that We (Allah) created the heavens and the earth and all that is between them.

Our life is nothing but a diversion and play; however, the Afterlife is the Eternal one!

Surah: 29, Verse: 64

The life of this world is nothing but a diversion and play. Indeed, the everlasting residence is the eternal life, if they but knew.

We are playing in this life; however, the Afterlife is the better Eternal home for those who understand!

Surah: 6, Verse: 32

The life of this world is but playing and an amusement. Surely, the everlasting home is better for the cautious. Will you not understand?

Surah: 47, Verse: 36

The life of this world is but play and an amusement. if you believe and are cautious, He will give you your wage, and will not ask for your possessions.

Surah: 57, Verse: 20

Know that the life of this world is but play and an amusement, and adornment, and a cause for boasting among you, a rivalry for greater riches and children. it is like rain whose vegetation pleases the unbelievers, but then it withers and turns yellow, becoming broken stubble. in the everlasting life is a terrible punishment, forgiveness, and great pleasure from Allah. the life of this world is nothing except the joy of delusion.

Another translation of the verse (57:20):

Know ye (all), that the life of this world is but play and amusement, pomp and mutual boasting and multiplying, (in rivalry) among yourselves, riches and children. here is a similitude: how rain and the growth which it brings forth, delight (the hearts of) the tillers; soon it withers; thou wilt see it grow yellow; then it becomes dry and crumbles away. but in the hereafter is a penalty severe (for the devotees of wrong). and forgiveness from Allah and (his) good pleasure (for the devotees of Allah). and what is the life of this world, but goods and chattels of deception?

Back to the main topic of my series of articles (1- 74); this is my question to you smart readers: “Is the Quran quoted from the Bible “?

Honest Answers About Divorce

November 19th, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in divorce

Many don’t want to admit this, but divorce might be the only option for a healthy lifestyle. There are many things that go into the decision of whether to get a divorce or not. Since a divorce can have far-reaching effects on your life, it’s important to find out what a divorce can involve before you make your decision. We wish to cover some of the worries you may have regarding divorce and its negative effects.

My spouse has filed for divorce. Can I oppose it?

You can oppose the idea of it, but you cannot stop the proceedings from continuing. Once a spouse has filed for divorce, the other spouse is forced to comply with the filing. The best recourse when your spouse files for divorce is to get a divorce lawyer so you can be sure that your rights are protected immediately. In the United States and Canada, a divorce will be granted even if one spouse files and the other refuses to participate or even acknowledge the proceedings. In most states, there is the “no fault” rule, which means that you can get divorced for any reason. In this situation, your spouse can simply state “irreconcilable differences” and the divorce proceedings can get underway.

What is the process for filing for divorce?

File for divorce without letting your spouse know by heading to the courthouse and filling out all the required paperwork correctly. It’s best to hire an attorney to file the papers for you if you want to ensure that it is done right. If you are afraid of what your spouse might do, the whole procedure can be dealt with without their knowledge until papers are served to them. If your spouse is temperamental, this may be your best choice so that you can be away from home when he/she is served with papers, avoiding any immediate disputes.

Where can I find state-specific information about laws and statutes?

The best and most reputable place to find state-specific information about divorces is at your local divorce attorney’s office. They have been through divorce proceedings and they have a great deal of experience with divorces in your state. You might also be able to find forms and regulations online. If you visit your state’s official website, they might have links to divorce laws and regulations for your state. Most times, there is a small fee to download the forms needed to file for divorce in your state. Be careful, though. Make sure the website you get your information from is a reputable site.

My divorce will be official in a matter of weeks. Can my spouse legally get married again before the divorce is final?

Yes, in a purely technical sense. It is against the law for a person to be married to two or more people at the same time. Marrying someone else is a violation of bigamy laws in many states until your divorce is finalized. This is only a technicality, though. Most of the time, the court will not consider a second marriage as disregarding the law. While you can file suit against your spouse for breaking bigamy laws if they are getting married prior to the finalization of your divorce, this will usually be an exercise in futility since lawyers and the legal system in general usually do not pursue these cases.

I have just filed for divorce. How long will it be before it is final?

If you have filed for an uncontested divorce, the entire ordeal can be over in a matter of a few weeks. If you have a disputable divorce, on the other had, it could be quite awhile before the divorce is officially final. If you have children together, some states require a waiting period before actually filing the divorce papers. The court’s schedule also plays a major role in how long the divorce will take. If they have many cases to go through, you may be waiting awhile. If you talk to the court clerk, they might be able to give you an idea about how long it will be. Your divorce attorney will also have more information to give you a better idea.

Interesting Facts/ Notes About Christmas

November 4th, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in holidays

It is an accepted fact that the Christmas tree tradition is one that was brought to the shores of America by German immigrants who continued a practice that was popular in their former homeland. Today, a Christmas tree, even a miniature one, is present in just about every home at Christmas. It is therefore interesting to note some little-know facts about the Christmas Tree and other traditions related to Christmas.

The first interesting fact is the source of real Christmas Trees for some Americans. These can be bought at a Christmas Tree Farm or at many local stores and other places of business in just about every town and city across the country around Christmas time. But according to the National Christmas Tree Association, Americans buy about 330,000 Christmas trees that are real through e-commerce or from a catalogue and have them shipped by mail-order.

The scent of real Christmas trees is the reason they are so popular. But as they stand silently in their decorative wonder, they also are providing another benefit. The Christmas Tree Association says the amount of oxygen produced on a daily basis by one acre of Christmas tree is enough to provide enough oxygen for 18 people. And during the first week, a Christmas Tree at home will use up to one quart of water each day to help retain its longevity for the many days of Christmas.

Since Christmas celebrations gained popularity in America, the Christmas Tree has always been a big tradition. During the 1950s however, artificial Christmas trees were not always green. It was very popular during those times to have artificial trees with other colors such as silver, pink and aqua. The appeal in having these colored Christmas trees may have been due to the fact that they looked shiny and bright and appeared like tinsel instead of green foliage.

An important ceremony related to the Christmas tree that gains national attention during the Christmas season is the lighting of the National Christmas Tree at the White House. This tradition can be credited to President Calvin Coolidge who lit the first decorated Christmas tree outside at the White House in 1923.

The lighting of the National Christmas Tree has also been used to convey some symbolic meaning not related to Christmas. It was not lighted until Dec. 22 in 1963 because of a national mourning period of 30 days for the assassination of President Kennedy. And while Teddy Roosevelt was President he gave an order that banned the Christmas tree from the White House, not for the assassination of President McKinley in 1901, which caused him to become president, but for reasons related to the environment.

Also of note is that when the National Christmas Tree was lighted on Dec. 13 in 1984, temperatures were in the 70s during an unusually warm December. Christmas has been celebrated in the United States since the 1600s although it wasn’t always very popular. It took more than two centuries into the mid-late 1860s for Christmas to become a popular holiday season all across America.

So maybe the rest of the country owes the holiday of Christmas Day to the state of Alabama, which in 1836 became the first state to declare Dec. 25 a legal

holiday. It is interesting to note that on Christmas Day of 1789 Congress was in session. And to show how far ahead of the game Alabama was, it wasn’t until June 26, 1870 that the federal government declared Christmas as a federal holiday.

Although Christmas is based on the Christian religion, not all Christian groups celebrate the season. Among the Christian groups who do not celebrate Christmas and related traditions such as sending greeting cards are Jehovah Witnesses.

Jehovah Witnesses and other non-participating Christian groups say Christmas isn’t specifically mentioned in the Bible as a time or reason to celebrate and since they strictly adhere to the word of the Bible, they refuse to celebrate Christmas.
