I Want To Start A Social-work Business. Can I Be Ethical And Profitable At The Same Time?
January 11th, 2010 by admin | Filed under social.I have a real passion for helping people change their lives, and offering suggestions & resources to them. I want to establish a social services firm to serve people who are in need of these services (such as counseling, job training, and resource connections), and then expand. Many corporations seem to be more concerned about the bottom line than the people they serve. I don’t want to be like that. I want to offer affordable, accesible social services for people, but I am concerned about profit. How does one balance the needs of their clients with the desire for good profit?

Yes you can do both - you won’t make millions or be fantastically rich, but you CAN build a self-sustaining, ethical, socially-concious company.
Remember that “non-profit” doesn’t mean the organization is perpetually in debt - it means they can’t put profits ahead of their mission. Most for-profit companies have a duty to put their stockholders ahead of their clients or even their employees - essentially, they have to promise to pay back the people who invested in them before they do anything else.
How you structure your company is up to you, but be sure to research how other organizations are structured, and examine where they’ve succeeded or failed. Check http://www.charitynavigator.org for a comprehensive list of charitable organizations.
In fact it is unethical to develop a company that is not financially and fiscally responsible. If you develop a company that does not make its budget and add revenue to your reserve, eventually you will not be in business, then your clients, staff, referral sources and in fact the whole community are harmed. The finacial health of an organization makes it possible to expand services to meet additional unmet needs, it makes it possible to get more money (people give money to organizations that are going to be able to use the money to grow. So yes it is not only possible but the only ethical thing to do. DA
