How Many Gigs Of Ram Is Good For A Netbook?

October 23rd, 2009 by admin | Filed under technie stuff.

Im customizing a dell inspiron mini 10v and I’ve come to the choices of selecting my storage. I don’t know whether to choose from a 4GB memory card, and 8GB memory card, or a 16 GB memory card.
I’ll mainly use the netbook for web surfing but i’ll also put a few pictures and music on it…

Ok, you are confusing RAM (temporary storage) with Hard drive space (long-term storage).
Depending on how much music you want to have on it, you are going to want anywhere from 8Gigs on up.
Keep in mind that most Iphones have about 8-16 gigs of storage and many people find this is not enough to store all the music they want.
One song will take up abou 3-5 MB of storage. That is .003-.005 GB of data. You can do the math.
Keep in mind that the Operating System and installed programs will likely take up almost 4 GB on their own.

what your talking about is not system ram but additional removable storage. You don’t actually need any but if you want to use a chip for a camera or transferring from comp to comp u can. the 320 gig passport it an external hd available int he customization and is nice extra storage. This is not system ram though. you netbook has one gig of system ram…they are very slow but light weight and small. Looks like they come with a 160 gig hd or a 16 gig solid state

Each picture you take with camera, file size is about 1MB in size. So 1000 pics will take 1GB of hard drive space. Each song takes about 3-5MB in size, so 200 songs will take 1GB of hard drive space. Allow 4GB for programs, and think about what you need.
The SSD(memory card) is more shock proof than regular hard drive. So if you carry your netbook a lot, it is better choice. But regular hard drive gives you more storage space(160GB = 10 times 16GB SSD).
So how much is proper depends on how much pictures/songs you will have. Also each 1 hour avi movie takes about 1GB.
If you get SSD and find that you need extra space, get SD card(16GB) and store data there, or USB flash drive(16GB), or external portable drive(300GB) to store there. I think the SD card plugs into the memory card slot and does not stick out(flash drive or portable drive will stick out), so you can carry it around with SD card plugged in. Whenever you need more storage, you can get more SD card and swap it out.

By memory do you mean RAM? If so then I don’t think a laptop let alone a netbook can take more then 4GB of memory. If you were referring to the hard drive then the more the better.
