Netbooks typically are designed to operate for long periods of time on battery power. Thus, they have slower processors, no optical disk, and some replace a spinning hard disk with a solid state drive (SSD).
The “standard” CPU these days is the Intel G270 “Atom” processor, which runs at 1.6GHz. Compare that to the 2.4+ mulitcore CPUs found in most laptops these days.
Netbooks don’t have the graphics to play online games, watch videos, or do high-intensive computing. Their primary purpose is for web surfing, email and light word processing.
The smaller netbooks also have smaller keyboards. This makes typing a challenge for lengthy work.
So, not only are netbooks smaller in size, they are pretty much “smaller” in capability, too. I own a netbook, and it has its purposes, but I wouldn’t want one as my primary computer!

They tend to focus on battery life and weight over performance and screen size. You will wait longer for windows to open, for pages to load, and for files to copy. You will have to look at a smaller screen, and your fingers will be cramped when typing. Your wallet won’t hurt as much. Your bag won’t be as heavy.

other than the smaller screen, they usually don’t have an optical (CD/DVD) drive and they have a slow, low-power processor.
