Just FYI, memory usually refers to RAM (which you should also increase to 2gb and it’s a 10 min. install if you’ve never done it before).
As far as storage goes you have a lot of options these days and most are pretty economical. You can use USB flash drives, SD cards if she has the slots for that (most netbooks do), an external hard drive, and also upgrading the on board hard drive to something bigger but that would be a pain…
